Message
Wish you all a "Happy New Year 2012"
The Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is a Statutory Body constituted by the Govt. of India under the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970. The main objectives of the Council are to prescribe minimum standards of education in Indian Systems of Medicine comprising of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani, to advise Central Government in the matters relating to recognition of medical qualification in these Systems of Medicine; to maintain a Central Register of Indian Medicine and to prescribe Standards of Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Code of Ethics to be observed by the practitioners. At present, there are 262 Ayurveda, 41 Unani and 9 Siddha medical colleges offering undergraduate and post-graduate degree courses, recognised by CCIM and affiliated to 51 different Universities in the country.

CCIM is committed for quality education of the students of ISM, development of system of ISM in each and every aspect by which the world wide awareness and acceptance of these ancient Indian system of medicine can be increased. For the last two decades, Council has been very progressive to achieve its goals and to make Indian System of Medicine popular globally. CCIM has worked tremendously in various ways. Keeping in mind the needs of all the students and community, National workshop to review the existing syllabus of UG and PG was conducted successfully at Bangalore and the new UG/PG syllabus has already been implemented from this academic session and made available in Hindi, English and Sanskrit languages. There was a feeling amongst the students and practitioners of Ayurveda that if some clinical expertise/ specialization of short course of period are made available, it will help them to practice Ayurveda more confidently and to deliver specialized services to the common people, which will eventually popularize Ayurveda amongst the general public. Taking into consideration these facts, CCIM has designed a new Ayurveda PG Diploma Course in 16 subjects with the aim to start these courses to produce and equip Vaidyas to practice Ayurveda confidently and successfully as specialists of Ayurveda, Likewise provision designing work of new PG diploma courses in Unani & Siddha systems is under process and existing syllabus of UG & PG reviewed, new syllabus of Unani & Siddha already implemented. This will definitely start a trend to practice certain speciality in Ayurveda/Unani/Siddha practitioners. Central register of Indian medicine has been displayed on website; therefore, the practitioners can verify their names in Central Register of Indian medicine.

Minimum standards of regulations has been built up by CCIM for running of Ayurveda/Unani/Siddha colleges of good standards, this regulation is pending for sanction under Govt. of India.

It has been proposed to celebrate Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha Day each year in form of World Ayurveda Day (28th December), World Unani Day (4th October) and world Siddha Day (14th April). Proposals have been sent to Govt. of India for declaration.

For the improvement of infrastructure, facilities of teaching and practical training of the Institutions and fulfilment of minimum standards, norms, serious steps have been taken by the present Council. Before the year 2008-09, substandard colleges were flourished, during the tenure of present Council stopped the admission of students in the sub standard colleges for the year of 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.More than the 50% colleges were closed down due to substandard norms, Out of which,75% were private colleges.
As results of that, about 50% of Govt. and private colleges of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani systems were not recommended for admissions during 2008-09 and 2009-10. During scrutiny of visitation reports, it has been found that name of many teachers are present in two or more then two colleges. After verification of previous experiences from concerned colleges, it is also found that previous experiences and affidavits of many teachers were produced false. The matter of legal action in this regard is under process. As a result of such strict monitoring, the standard of teaching and training is improving continuously. It came into the knowledge of CCIM that many colleges are taking services of large no. of teaching staff on paper only. These teachers come only at the time of Govt./University/CCIM visitation and maintaining fake IPD/OPD records for purpose of visitation. CCIM has been strict to stop this malpractice.

Here, it is advised to the management and principles of all colleges, if any member of CCIM /officer makes any unwanted demand during inspection or any other time, please inform me immediately, so that action may be taken against the concerned people.

I am more considerate towards student’s future and therefore, it is advised to the students, see the status of college as permitted/not permitted on our official website before taking admission in to the college. If any teacher is not teaching or not attending the classes of theory and practicals etc. in that college, please inform me personally, so that appropriate steps may be taken against the irregularities.

As there is Global resurgence of Indian Systems of Medicine, CCIM is trying to make the good quality education of these Systems of Medicine at par to get the recognition as Global System of Medicine and to cater the health services of preventive and curative nature to the mankind.

In an attempt to bring back the pristine glory of these Systems, we earnestly look forward and deeply appreciate productive suggestions from the fraternity and faculty for the all-round development. We strongly hope that this New Year would bring health, happiness and prosperity to you and your family.
Thanks with regards,

Yours,
Vaidya Raghunandan Sharma
